Jay's musings on the season: Bad news, followed by good news

This has been a holiday season for mixed emotions. First, my father died on Dec. 16. It wasn't a surprise. He suffered from Alzheimer's and had been declining rapidly. Still, losing a parent never is easy. I lost my mom when I was 18. That was a shock. Losing my dad at 49 was more of just a melancholy time, and a time to reflect and be thankful for great memories and great mentoring.

We drove the family to Mesa, Ariz., for the funeral. It was a harrowing drive with lots of snow in Utah, Nevada and Northern Arizona.

But sorrow quickly turned to joy this evening when our son Daniel called from China to tell us that he and his wife, Holly, are expecting a child.

Life travels on well-greased wheels, never slowing for a second and always gaining speed. One minute you’re shopping for a suitable house in which to raise children and coaxing them to hang up their good clothes after church. The next minute, one of them calls you to say you are going to be a grandfather.

Always, if you're paying attention, life reminds you that the truly important thing is your family, no matter how goofy they are.
